Last Saturday I was at a local music festival. As you might remember I helped painting t-shirts at an event a while ago, for DJ collective ‘Kattekwaad’. This is the second time we collaborated with them. The whole day at the festival people could hand in their (old) shirt while we made paintings on them. We even have a name. From now on we’re no longer random young creatives painting shirts, but you can call us: ‘The big bug collection’. Below are some of my creations.
(Our ingenious cooling system)
This one might need a little explanation. ‘Kattekwaad’ is a Dutch word and means something like innocent mischief. But taking it really literal, ‘kat’ translates as ‘cat’ and ‘kwaad’ as angry or evil. That’s why a lot of cat designs keep popping up on shirts.
And some cases were taken a bit more serious than others; this guy didn’t even bother to take his shirt off, everyone just started painting on him (notice the hair dryer for the wet paint).

At one point it became too dark to paint on, so we simply enjoyed the last part of the festival, danced bare feet on the grass under the full moon, the lake at one side, trees on the other. It was a really good day.

Wow! Fantastic!!! I used to sell painted tees and sneakers and jeans to my classmates in high school… this reminds me of that! Love your name too! Looks like a great way to get to socialize with all the concert attendees too!

@ Style Dilettante: That’s so cool! I never tried that but I would’ve loved to have. And you are absolutely right, people were drawn to our location curiously and I had a lot of fun interacting with them. Also it was great to see their reaction on their shirt; most were really happy and kept thanking me. Today I was in the city centre and I saw the guy with the many bugs on his shirt walk by (who I don’t know personally)- with my shirt on! It made me really happy seeing him wear it.
@ Marietta: yeah you should totally have been there! Would be fun, me painting, you knitting, while being in the sun and enjoying the people and music. And we wouldn’t need amused ladies because everybody would be amused by our knitting-painting combo :p

Wow! Great shirts! I would love to be able to create like that but that kind of artistry is just not my best talent!
Thanks for the comment on my blog- I know what it is like living in student house, and having terrible kitchens… I learned to get very crafty with toaster ovens!

@ Carrie: Thanks!
@ Laura: Thanks :) Well, I live in the Netherlands. Right now we aren’t accepting any other shirts than on the festival or event where we paint itself. We haven’t even considered things like shipping. At this point we’re doing it just for fun. However many people were so enthusiastic that I would love to see us grow in the future. So who knows..

@ M.G.T.: Thanks! You could try, everyone has to start somewhere.. And it should be more about the fun than the result anyways. Haha and I can imagine about the toaster oven :D
@ erinchristel: That would definitely be a great idea! Actually there would be a lot of fun things you could do with a white dress.. hmm :)
@ Ash: Thanks! Any kind of bug or a specific kind? I mostly like ladybugs…
