It has been a while since my last creative challenge, so it is about time for a new one. As always, feel free to join me if you like. More information about these weekly challenges here.

The challenge: Make stains and sketch in and/or around them to create a new work of art.

Sketching is a great way to exercise your creative muscles. Somehow a white blank piece of paper can be quite daunting though. So why not start with a stain instead? You can use paint and ink to drip in your sketchbook, or use existing stains you find on notes and papers around you. I find this a fun thing to do, and try to see something in the stain and make something from it. I have used the last drops of my coffee in class to survive boring classes while doodling in my notebook, and even used the street as my canvas when finding a huge stain of paint on the sidewalk. The size and form doesn’t really matter. This week’s challenge is going to be about doodling, having fun and creating new things that you wouldn’t have thought of without that stain. I’m going to try to make one every day.

And some cool inspiration to get you started; artwork by L Filipe dos Santos (example sketch below) and Jose Domingo Betancur Gomez

This is a great challenge! Looking forward to seeing the results.

I am now inspired to set myself a challenge too. I feel like experimenting with food, so I might give that a go. Cook something i never have before, i’ll see.
Enjoy your challenge and have fun.

Food experiments sound fun as well! I had quite some fun trying new stuff and experimenting while cooking. I don’t do it that often though. Maybe I should try something new again soon! :)

Well Filipe deserves all the credit (as mentioned) but I agree with you :) It’s kind of daunting to have such a great example (when my sketches don’t turn out that awesome) but at the same time really inspiring :)

Oh, this is a great idea. It is hard to get started with a blank sheet of paper a lot of times, but to have a stain to pull inspiration from… well, that ought to get the creative juices flowing. I must try this! :)

What a brilliant idea – I love drawing but blank pages terrify me, so I’ll have to give this a try : )

I really love your blog. You are so inspirational! I spend most of my time being a musician, and not enough time being a visual artist, and so my blog is often empty :(. I really loved going through all of your posts! (well, as many as I could read in an hour!)

Thanks for telling me! It means a lot :) I try to live a creative life, but I find it even more awesome to inspire others to live creatively as well. In the end it is about challenging ourselves. That can be more in music or on a visual level, as long as we love what we do and keep growing :)
